Trends in Private Equity and Institutional Investing

Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University · Asset Management Practicum · 2021–2022

Matthew Scanlan returned to the Kellogg School of Management’s Asset Management Practicum as a guest lecturer during the 2021–2022 academic year, speaking on trends in private equity and institutional investing. The session drew on his experience as an Operating Executive at Golden Gate Capital, where he worked with financial services portfolio companies, and his board role at Adams Street Partners, one of the leading private markets investment firms.

Scanlan addressed the evolution of institutional allocations to private equity — including the growth of co-investment, the rise of continuation vehicles, and the increasing sophistication of LP due diligence — as well as broader trends in how institutional investors were navigating a low-yield environment and the ongoing convergence of public and private market strategies. The lecture reflected his perspective as someone who had led public market investment businesses at scale before transitioning into private equity operating and board roles.
