BGI SponsorMatch DC Annuity Product Launch

Barclays Global Investors · 2007 · New York City

In 2007, Matthew Scanlan served as principal spokesperson for the launch of BGI’s SponsorMatch product — a defined-contribution annuity designed to embed lifetime income guarantees within a standard 401(k) structure. BGI filed 14 patent claims on the underlying process, reflecting the firm’s view that the product represented a genuine structural innovation in retirement plan design.

Scanlan described SponsorMatch as bringing the best of defined-benefit investing into defined-contribution options, addressing what he identified as the fundamental gap in the DC system: the absence of a guaranteed income stream in retirement. The launch was covered by Pensions & Investments and InvestmentNews, both of which quoted Scanlan on the product’s design rationale and its potential to shift how plan sponsors structure participant investment menus. Kristi Mitchem of BGI appeared alongside Scanlan at the announcement.
